First official CoreHealth Wellness blog post!!!
We are finally getting caught up on the late 90s of social networking.
For our first post, we wanted to let our patients and readers know more about a more natural way to overcome muscle spasm and inflammation. This is a common problem with any person and is something that can lead to more issues if not properly managed and resolved.
A localized protective response elicited by injury or destruction of tissues, which serves to destroy, dilute, or wall off both the injurious agent and the injured tissue. 1
A common solution is to take an over the counter (OTC) medication that claims to resolve inflammation. This can be a problem do to the undesired side effects of the medication. There are several medications that claim to combat inflammation as one of its “many benefits”, but if a person does not have a cold, pain, headache, or other issues that the medication claims to treat, then why put chemicals in your body that are unnecessary? Medications bring with them a multitude of chemicals that your body has to process and filter. One of which is Acetaminophen, commonly known as Tylenol. This drug has known correlation to liver damage, dangerous reactions including skin rashes, digestive problems, vomiting, and weakness or confusion. An overdose can lead to death.2
A common form of anti-inflammatory medication is Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS). These include most common OTC drugs such as Aspirin, Aleve, and Ibuprofen. These have several side effects, mostly digestive problems that can cause constipation, diarrhea, and ulcers if not taken properly. 3
We like for our patients to avoid undesirable side effects with a more natural solution to pain and inflammation. There are several natural remedies and supplements that can be used to combat inflammation and reduce muscle spasm.
To treat muscle spasm, especially following a cervical injury such as whiplash. A regiment of Valerian with a Calcium/Magnesium supplement can be very beneficial.
To reduce general inflammation, there are several solutions.
Proteolytic Enzymes supplementation aids in breaking down proteins into amino acids. This can not only aid digestion, but promote muscle and tissue healing. Common sources for these are pineapple, sauerkraut, ginger, papaya, and kiwi. 4
Bioflavinoids have been used in alternative medicine as an aid to enhance the action of vitamin C, to support blood circulation, as an antioxidant, and to treat allergies, viruses, or arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. 5
Omega 3 and Omega 6 supplements have many benefits. Omega 3 is well known for drastically decreasing your chances of stroke or fatal heart attack, but also for regulating cholesterol and improving your digestive functions, this brings with it several anti-inflammatory benefits.6 Omega 6 is actual a pro-inflammatory essential fatty acid, if not properly balanced with Omega 3. This is a problem common for Americans, as our diet consists of 15x as many naturally occurring Omega 6 fatty acids than it does Omega 3. While the benefits for Omega 6 are plentiful, everything needs to be balanced in order for this to work.7
